Economic Impact Studies
Sixel Consulting Group economic impact studies are powerful tools to
help an airport explain its value to its community and its region.
Our studies are designed to determine the overall impact of air
carrier service at an airport, the impact of each flight offered by
different fleet types, the impact of airport employment, the indirect impact of that employment on the
community, and the indirect economic impact of the Airport’s
services on the community and region as a whole.
Our team has particular expertise in determining the impact of
future air service on a community and the wider region. At an
airport’s direction we can determine the impact of additional
airline service provided by specific airlines, including the impact
of low fare stimulation, increased enplanements and reduced leakage,
and additional potential economic development.

SCG economic impact studies rely on our collection of current local
data to insert into our “input-output” methodology. Under this
methodology, our team members measure three separate effects of
airport economic impact: direct, indirect, and induced effects.
Direct effects include employment and output generated directly by
the Airport. Indirect effects represent employment and output
generated by firms primarily off-airport, but whose activities are
attributable to the Airport. Induced effects are the multiplier
effects caused by successive rounds of spending throughout the
economy as a result of an airport’s direct and indirect effects. In
this method, an airport’s total economic impact is determined as the
sum of the direct, indirect, and induced effects.
In projecting the impact of new service on an airport, our analysis
includes the “halo effect” of that new service on the enplanements
of other carriers serving the Airport. In many markets this “halo
effect” has resulted in other airlines seeing increase traffic due
to the presence of a new airline or new route in retaining and
growing the local passenger base. Thus, the economic impact of new
service cannot be fully understood without the full realization of
its impact in growing enplanements, and economic activity, on other
carriers.
Sixel Consulting Group economic impact studies are written clearly
and concisely, so an airport can share the results directly with the
community. Once a study is complete, SCG team members are always
ready to answer questions, from community members, board members, or
media, about the methodology used and the validity of the results.
